Travel Wright Vienna: The Secession

June 15-21, 2018

In 1903, when Frank Lloyd Wright was creating a new type of uniquely American architecture, a similarly monumental shift was occurring in Europe with the opening of the Wiener Werkstätte. This workshop’s full-fledged leap into modernism was made possible by the artists of the Secession, who believed that art could transform society. Discover how these revolutionaries — including Gustav Klimt, Josef Hoffmann, Joseph Maria Olbrich and Otto Wagner — broke from Vienna’s imperial past and strove to create Gesamtkunstwerk, “a total work of art.”

The world was opening up to Vienna’s artists, designers and architects, as they in turn distilled influences from Britain, Japan and the United States. Viennese architects were well aware of Chicago’s urban architectural renaissance beginning in the 1880s. Did the work of the Vienna Secession, in turn, influence Frank Lloyd Wright?

Ponder this question on an extraordinary excursion presented by the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust. Enjoy curator-led tours, private museum visits and authentic Viennese cuisine on this 6-day, 5-night in-depth investigation of Vienna, one of Europe’s most stunning cities.
